Grace Baptist Church-Kisumu is unashamedly Calvinistic in beliefs and we confess together with others the 1689 London confession of faith which we believe adequately summarizes the biblical doctrines and practices worthy to hold to.
Beliefs in summary
GOD: There is one God, who exists eternally in three distinct but equal persons: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is the Creator and the one who governs the creation according to his own will and providence.
JESUS CHRIST: He is fully God and fully man. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary and lived a sinless and perfect life here on earth. He was a teacher of great authority and his words have authority over the church. He died for sinners on the Cross at Calvary, there God put the sins of his elect saints on Christ Jesus hence redeeming them by his blood. He rose from the dead, ascended back into heaven where he now intercedes for his people before God.
THE HOLY SPIRIT: He is the third person of the Trinity sent from heaven to glorify Christ and to apply the work of Christ in the lives of sinners. He convicts sinners, imparts spiritual life and gives a true understanding of the Scriptures. He indwells all believers and gifts them for the work of the service to God.
SALVATION: This entirely a work of the grace of God and no man can earn it through good works. Christ accomplished and we depend on his merit alone. God calls sinners to whom he grants repentance and faith in Jesus. These, are justified before God on account of Christ alone.
THE CHURCH: All who are saved belong to the universal church, of which Christ Jesus is the head. This is broken down to local churches which is a congregation of local believers committed to Christ and to each other. They encourage one another in faith through the: joint worship of God, preaching of God’s word, administering baptism and the Lord’s Supper and discipline of errant members among other things.
THE BIBLE: God has revealed all that we need to know for salvation in the 66 books of the Bible which consists of the Old and the New Testament alone. It is an inspired book that God used ordinary men to write His words to men. It is without error, final, authoritative in all Christian doctrines. It is therefore sufficient for our faith in matters of belief and practice.
BAPTISM AND LORD’S SUPPER: These were handed down to the church by Christ as visible signs of the Gospel. Baptism is symbol of union with Christ and entry into the church but it NEVER imparts salvation. It is to be administered to already savedindividuals. The Lord’s Supper is a commemoration of Christ’s sacrifice offered once and for all. The elements used do not change in any way except they symbolize the body and the blood of Christ surrendered at Calvary for sinners.
HUMAN RACE: All men and women having been created in the image of God, have equal dignity and worth. Their greatest call is to worship and love God. However, as the result of the fall of our first parents in the Garden of Eden, every aspect of human nature has been corrupted and all men stand as sinners before God. They need to be born again, forgiven and reconciled to God in order to know and to please God.
THE FUTURE: The Lord Jesus Christ will return in glory. He will raise the dead and judge the world in righteousness. The unrepentant wicked people will be sent to eternal punishment while the righteous will be welcomed in to life eternal full of joy in fellowship with God.
